How to go as a driver

Advantages.

While you’re on your way to work with empty seats in the car, our app finds the people who are willing to share expenses, and can be carried in your car, so you can save up to 75% of costs (not only the fuel cost, but also the cost of the purchase and maintenance of the vehicle).

Sharing the empty seats pays off.

If you’ve never calculated it, the cost of moving your car may be greater than you think (up to one $ per mile). Check out here. Fortunately, by carrying just a passenger, you recover 50%. The more seats are occupied, the more money will save all of you. You can use the app to save on all your travels (it is free for the driver). If you keep going alone in your car, you will be throwing money down the drain.

In addition, if you carry three passengers, your car pollutes one quarter (of what all of you would pollute, if each one would go in his own car). The most efficient engine that we can invent, will never be able to match this.

Likewise, you’ll withdraw from circulation some cars, and probably will never again get stuck in a traffic jam, you will arrive in less time, and will find parking much easier.

What does the driver do? (in four steps):

  1. Tell where you are going, and how many free seats you have.
  2. The app indicates where there is a compatible passenger.
  3. You agree to carry him.
  4. The app guides you

1. Say where you’re going and how many free seats you offer.

When you start your trip, just point out in the app the place where you are going, and how many free seats you have (your smartphone’s GPS keeps the system informed of where you are).

To increase your chances of finding some passengers, and begin sharing expenses with them as soon as possible, you should also indicate how much are you willing to deviate from your route, in order to collect or deliver passengers (eg.: I admit a deviation of a 10% of the length of the planned route, or the turn-off don’t implies arriving later than a certain moment). The system monitors your route and manage this tolerance to optimize the travel, to get you bring the car at all times as full as possible, and thus, you can recover most of the travel expenses.

2. The app indicates where there is a compatible passenger.

As you progress along your route, we explore nearby passengers who have requested a ride in the platform and, as soon as we discover that one of them wants to do a tour that fits with yours, the app tells you he is waiting.

The app tells you his name and his reputation level as passenger (which depends on how many trips he has shared, the score that his fellow travellers have given to him, and that there haven’t been complaints about him).

3. You agree to take it in one of your free seats.

You can accept carrying the proposed passenger, or reject him and continue up to the next.

Keep in mind that you are interested on collecting someone right away, to start to share expenses as soon as possible.  By each additional passenger you carry, the savings for all of you increases. This way you will pay on your own the minimum share of the cost of the travel.

4. The app guides you.

The pick-up point for passenger and your best delivery point, are interspersed on the route, on the way to your destination. At each time, the app guides you towards the next route point and tells whom you must pick up or deliver on it.

When you arrive at your destination, after having delivered the last passenger, we make the reimbursement of expenses that correspond to you, according to the passengers you carried in each section. Then, the app tells you how much money, fuel and CO2 emissions you have saved.

Passengers will also collaborate.

To prevent wasting your time, or having to deviate much from your route, passengers will go to be picked up on the streets where cars are more likely to pass. They also indicate a distance they are willing to walk to their true destination point, from a convenient delivery point, where you leave them without much disruption to continue your journey.

In addition to paying their part of the expenses of the journey, to be reimbursed to the driver, the passengers are who pay the coordination service through a small fee for each trip.

Easy to use.

No need to negotiate the price at an auction of seats, or provide change in order to charge passengers, not even give them your phone number.

The system calculates an equitable distribution of the travel costs of all the people going in the car. At the end of the trip, the system also intermediates on transactions, automatically charges each passenger their part, then reimburses the sum of them to the driver, using the preferred payment method indicated by each one when registering.

How many travel expenses will reimburse me the passengers?

In principle, the driver runs in advance with all expenses of the car where the trip is made, its acquisition, filling the fuel tank, insurance, servicing, maintenance, etc. and corresponding taxes.

Whenever passengers are carried, the system will calculate, will collect and will refund to the driver the proportionate share of all the travel expenses corresponding to those passengers.

The exact amount will depend on how long the trip and how many people go in the car at each of its sections. (See here the amount per mile, and an example of sharing the cost of a trip)

The system will try to carry at all times your car as full as possible, to divide the costs among the largest possible number of occupants, and so be less the part that corresponds to you, which will be the only part not recovered by the driver.

As soon as you take a passenger, the costs are divided among at least two (the passenger and you) and each one pays half of what he would pay if he went alone in the car. From there, the bigger the number of people the driver brings in, the larger the fraction of the cost he will recover. In practice, with four passengers is common to realize savings of 75%.

However, a driver can never make money, because he counts as another one, when dividing the costs between the number of occupants of the car, and it is the system which fixes the cost per mile.

What if there is no passenger to carry?

It is unlikely to happen in your regular travel (to go to or from work) given the number of people travelling during rush hour.

It could only happen in unfrequented hours or routes. In this case, you have not to stop or divert to pick anyone, but neither would you save money.

The system will not charge you any fee. The coordination service is free for drivers.

Should I rather go as a driver or as a passenger?

Using you car or not, it depends on whether you like to drive, because it is economically indifferent.

We expect that some of those who now go by its own car, sometimes leave it at home and start going as passengers in somebody else’s car; because this way they don’t have to look for parking at destination, don’t have to worry or stres for driving, they gain in convenience and even take advantage of travel time reading or chatting with fellow travellers. But we do not want all of you to do so, because we need some cars to carry people.

We will try to slightly adjust the price of the mile, and to put it just high enough so that there is a sufficient number of people interested in driving, because they recover much of the costs. Thus an appropriate relationship between the number of seats offered by cars and the demand for them by passengers will be maintained.

This is why the price per mile might be slightly different among cities, or slowly vary over time, depending on the evolution of certain factors such as the price of cars or fuel.
